January, Second Week "Hey, Winona?""Wera?" Snap! With a small flash of light, the image of her Aquaera's inquiring face appeared on her X-Gear's screen. Amber let out a much-more-girly-than-usual giggle at the sight and grinned as she turned it around to show the image to Winona. "It works!" She knew she was being a bit silly, but at that moment she didn't care too terribly much. Especially because Winona seemed to share in her enthusiasm, as she carefully took the device in her flippers and peered at the picture. Smiling brightly, she let out a happy, "Wera!" and moved to hand it back. "Wera Aquaera!" Amber chuckled as she took the X-Gear back and clicked the button that she hoped was for saving photos; even though she knew that technically the device was intended for research, she wanted to keep that one. Abbie had tried her best to put together the piece of technology and explain its functions to Amber, but it was clear her second-cousin was not used to dealing with someone quite so illiterate regarding any technology more complicated than a pokeball. Amber had started talking about the pokemon species she'd been offered and shared a bit of her encyclopedic knowledge of them to compensate for her suddenly feeling very stupid during the conversation. Amber pocketed the device as they headed out town, her little otter-penguin-iguana waddling behind her. Aquaera definitely weren't all that fast, but she found herself not minding all that much. If all else failed, she could probably just pick up Winona and run for it if they came across trouble. At least until she evolved. Amber wondered what the evolved form looked like. Few pokemon remained mind-bendingly cute for all three stages, but she knew she wouldn't be disappointed, because no matter what she ended up looking like, Winona was her starter. Her assistant. An assistant that she'd broken five hearts upon choosing. Amber sighed a little as they left the buildings behind and she saw the long, winding path ahead of her. "Still feel bad 'bout that wynaut," she commented faintly. Winona glanced up at her curiously. "Wera?" Amber sighed again, stopping her walking for a moment. "I know what I should've said, an' when I should've said it. Should've told him why we wouldn't be a good match once I was done with talkin' with the fletchling, but instead my brain goes an' short-circuits on me an' I launch straight into tearin' a strip offa that meditite fer bullyin' you, an' by then I had all that momentum goin' an'..." She made a small noise of frustration and put a couple of fingers to her temple. "I hope that apology does get to the poor fella..."Winona looked at her new trainer for a few moments, then waddled over to gently pat her leg with her flipper. "Wera quera ahwera," she said softly, in her most comforting of voice. Amber smiled and leaned down to pet the top of her assistant's head. "Thanks, Winona. I know there's no sense dwellin' on it, since what's done is done, but I can't help but kick myself a lil bit fer it." She shook her head a bit, then gave a bright smile. "They'll all get 'emselves trainers who can make 'em shine, though. I jus' know it. Even that ornery meditite, f'she works on that attitude of hers."The little frown that came across Winona's face implied that the meditite finding a nice trainer was not exactly high on the list of things she was praying for, and Amber brushed her fingers against the top of her head in way that would have ruffled her fur had there been any on that particular spot to ruffle. "Everyone deserves to be happy, Winona, s'long as they actually work at it some."With that, her eyes went back to path before them. "Now, c'mon. You can meet my Ma an' Pa an' the rest of my family once we get to New Pallet." She started walking in confident strides, Winona waddling behind her.

As the duo walked down the path, everything was pretty quiet. Occasionally a small Pokemon would dart between two rocks or appear for a moment over a ridge, but never close enough to worry or for long enough to stop and study. This trend continued for a good ten minutes before a few little chirping sounds began picking up within earshot.
Suddenly there was a light vibration underfoot, and within a few more seconds a pair of Sandshrew popped up out of the ground a few meters in front of the travelers, locked in a tumbling battle. Judging by the irritated sounds they were making, they seemed to be squabbling over something. Neither looked particularly strong, although the one on the left-- oh wait now it was the righ-- no the forward-most-- well, one of the Sandshrew did look notably larger than the other. With Amber's extensive study of various species, there was a decent chance she would realize it was bigger than most of its kind, although seeing a height written on paper versus actually being familiar with those proportions from several meters away in real life.
Whatever the case, the two did not seem to notice Amber or Winona, but were hogging much of the path, tumbling back and forth across it as their squabble continued, stopping for a few seconds at a time to breathe before one would lunge back at the other again. There was no consistency to who appeared to be instigating it, just whichever seemed to catch their breath first.

Amber's eyes flicked left and right, catching the faint movements, while Winona continued to contentedly waddle along with her. The former found herself disappointed when all she could catch were glimpses, while the latter was just still deliriously happy to be out of that lab. No more boring routine while waiting for someone to take a chance on a 'new' species like her, no more dealing with that high-and-mighty psychic pain in the tail who thought she was so much better than anyone else just because she had meditation...And she had a name now! Today was the best day of her life.
Upon feeling the small vibration through her leather boots, Amber froze, and Winona followed suit. After a few tense seconds, the ground ahead erupted into a pair of angry sandshrew, making Winona squeak and take a half-step back in surprise.
Amber watched the pair of scrapping ground types, blinking furiously. Now, while she wasn't a battler, she also wasn't the kind of naive person who thought she could stop feral pokemon from doing what feral pokemon did, which was quite often fight. Over territory, food, mates, it didn't matter. It was perfectly natural. So, she had no intention of running in there and trying to separate them in a fit of masochism. However, there were two things about this situation that demanded her attention.
One, one of the sandshrew was clearly significantly larger than the other. Now, there was indeed a difference between a number on paper and seeing something in real life, but the fact that there was another, more normal-sized one right there meant that it was much easier to pick up on. She was actually pretty impressed that the smaller of the two was keeping up so well against a larger opponent. The second thing was that they were in the middle of the road, so walking around without getting caught up in the crossfire would be difficult, as she didn't want to stray far enough from the path to fall down a hole.
Amber was also curious as to what, exactly, they were fighting over, though obviously she couldn't just ask...
But maybe Winona could? She looked down at her starter pokemon, who looked up at her in return. Domestic pokemon could understand one another, and humans, without any problem. Feral pokemon, on the other hand, were often observed to naturally understand pokemon of similar elemental typing and pokemon who were genetically compatible with them. Sandshrew were ground type, and were part of the Field egg group. Aquaera were water type, and...
I have absolutely no idea what Winona's egg grouping is, Amber realized. That was among the things that were hush hush about the species. Now, there were some educated guesses she could make. Water One group was probably a given, since she was water typed and amphibious in nature, rather than the fish and invertebrates that made up the other water groups. And there were a number of Water One pokemon who also occupied the Field egg group. Psyduck, Seel, Wooper, Delibird, Spheal, Piplup, Bidoof, and Buizel, if memory served. Aquaera had fairly similar traits to some of those pokemon, so maybe?
"D'you think you can communicate with those two?" she asked, keeping her voice down slightly, though she wasn't sure how much she needed to, with all of the noise the sandshrew were making.
Winona looked at the sandshrew, then at Amber, then back at the sandshrew, then looked at Amber again and shrugged. "Wera wera."
Well, 'I don't know' was slightly better than 'no,' she supposed. "D'you think you could try givin' it a shot?" At the determined nod she received, Amber couldn't help but smile. "Thanks, Winona. Jus' ask 'em why they're scrappin' like that. Worst case scenario, I can probably grab you up an' outrun 'em easily."
With another nod, Winona took a few bold steps forward, the effect of which was slightly reduced by her waddling gait. She then took in a deep breath and hollered at the pair, "<Hey! What are you two so darn worked up over?>"
Attempting to communicate!

The larger Sandshrew stopped and tilted its head at the water type. What was it saying? Unfortunately, it looked like Aquaera was not in the Field Group. Darn. Taking this perfect opportunity, the smaller Sandshrew jumped on top of the other and pinned it down. A terrible cry came from the creature as its head banged against the tough earth. The smaller shrew laughed in victory, but was interrupted when the seemingly conquered Pokemon scratched its face and rolled it over.
Together they began to roll toward the trainer and her Pokemon. Winona wasn't able to escape in time and was hit by the accidental duo rollout.

Well, that was a spectacular failure. Winona was knocked back into her trainer's legs, and the water type flailed for a moment to try to right herself before Amber scooped her up into her arms and scrambled a few steps backward in an attempt to not have the pair of feral pokemon collide with her ankles. "I guess yer not compatible," she commented.
So, she wasn't Field, but Amber would still put her money on the species having two egg groups and one of them being Water One. There was only one water typed evolutionary line from the old world that wasn't part of at least one of the water egg groups, so it just seemed logical. Maybe it would be more obvious once she saw Winona's fully-evolved form for herself.
And maybe she should focus on the feral pokemon now and be a walking pokedex later. Especially since her research assistant seemed to be taking the next move into her own flippers.
Meaning, Winona started growling. Loudly. Amber was momentarily a bit stunned by the sound of something akin to the vicious rumbling of a furious growlithe emerging from the little pokemon in arms. Winona was of the mind that, if words weren't going to work, she'd rely on tone and volume. Lots of volume.

Winona seemed to finally catch the shrews' attention with her growl. The two skidded to a halt right in front of the trainer and her Pokemon. Aquaera's growl was scaring the larger one who was slowly trying to back away, but was knocked in the back of his head by the smaller creature. "Shrew!" it growled back to the other before jumping at Winona with its claws spread.
Being the braveheart that he was, the larger shrew took to curling himself in a ball and waiting for the next round.
Sandshrew(l) used scratch! Sandshrew(b)'s attack was lowered. Sandshrew(b) used defense curl. Defense increased.

Oh crap crap crap crap crap.
Well, this spectacular failure was rapidly spiraling further downward. The plan B of excessive volume only worked for about half of its target, and the other half was going on the offense by lunging straight at Winona, claws at the ready. Who Amber was still carrying.
With a very undignified squeak and a rush of adrenaline as twin instincts of 'protect' and 'don't get clawed' engaged, Amber scrambled backward in an attempt to avoid the feral sandshrew. Unfortunately, while Amber could be very speedy, agile, and coordinated under the majority of circumstances, running backward with an aquaera in her arms was not one of them, and she promptly tripped and fell over onto her backside. Right in time for clawing.
Winona took most of the hit, but one of Amber's arms was nicked by a claw, and she instinctively lashed out with a punch at the feral pokemon in response to the pain. It was a bit of a sloppy right hook, but her fist was still moving pretty fast.
Winona, for her part, as she was released from Amber's protective embrace, gave a surprisingly loud snarl and lunged at the offending shrew with the intention of slamming her whole body into it, allowing the other one to sit there curled up all he wanted. After all, even in a fit of rage, she was willing to respect her new trainer's wishes of only attacking in self-defense.
Amber tried to punch Sandshrew 1! Winona used Tackle on Sandshrew 1!

Amber did have the luck of actually hitting her target. Unfortunately, the Researcher seemed to misjudge the shrew's plating.. which was quite tough. Sandshrew immediately snarled at the woman before having its breath knocked out of it by the variant Pokemon. A little squeak pipped from the creature as Winona tackled it to the ground, followed by counter snarls of her own. A protective little thing she was.
"Kakakashrew!" it called in vexation. The larger, male shrew just barely uncurled itself, then made a worrisome cry before rewrapping its hide. Then, said Pokemon began spinning in its defended position - it would have resembled a certain blue hedgehog of another universe - which shot up a cloud of dust to contaminate the field in a flurry of sand. It wasn't quite a Sandstorm per say, but it was certainly a well developed move for an untrained Pokemon,
Winona's prize took advantage of the situation by backslapping her in the face and heaving itself back to its feet. "Saaen," it narrowed its eyes and called out to the Aquaera. A snort came from the ground type as it jumped back into the cloud with its claws out, ready for the next attack. What spunk.

Owwwwww...
No, this was most definitely not Amber's finest moment, right now. As Winona tackled the sandshrew to the ground, she grabbed her slightly-scratched arm with her throbbing hand and started to get back to her feet. A plan of 'recall Winona and run' was looking good right now, but it was sidetracked by the other feral sandshrew suddenly letting loose a very strange variety of Sand Attack, not quite a Sandstorm, that flooded the area with dirt. Amber flinched and backed up, coughing, but luckily was on her feet by now and thus not in the worst of it.
Winona had no such luck, and her flippers went to her face as she was smacked aside, coughing on the dust. Her tail lashed left and right with irritation, nearly pulling herself off her stubby feet with the force of it. These ferals both had armoured hides and out-numbered her two-to-one, even if the big guy wasn't attacking her directly. Under most circumstances, this would be a hopeless battle, but she had faith in three things. One, she had a trainer backing her up. Two, these pokemon had been fighting each other for Arceus knew how long and so had to at least be a little tired after that.
Three, Winona actually had a brain, something those old-world-stock snobs who called her 'feralspawn' would never admit she did.
It was hard to see with the cloud of dust, but her opponent was predictable, and she knew where the attack would be coming from. Low and behold, here came the monster racing in again. The claws cut into her scales, and she gritted her teeth at the pain, but now her opponent was nice and up close, and she knew from her previous tackle roughly how their sizes compared. Winona slammed her tail into the dirt, using both it and her legs to propel herself forward and up with the force of a tackle, trying to slam the ridge that ran along the middle of her skull right into the sandshrew's vulnerable lower face before it could get away from her.
With Amber, on the other hand, her plans to flee were temporarily postponed by this unusual attack the larger sandshrew had performed. That was absolutely fascinating. Was he unique in that regard, or was it a widespread trait? She didn't know, and now she very much wanted to find out. That was part of why she'd wanted to be a researcher, after all, to document differences between the old world and new...
Amber backed up away from the sand a little more and slipped off her pack. She'd realized what Winona had about these two, that it was doubtful that they were at full strength with the scrap they'd been in the middle of when she and Winona found them, but were they weakened enough by the fight? No time like the present to find out, she supposed, since it could even the playing field somewhat for her assistant. She pulled out an empty pokeball and aimed a toss at the larger sandshrew, or at least where he'd been sitting before forming the dirt cloud, on the assumption he hadn't moved.
Winona used Tackle on Sandshrew 1! (trying to turn it into a kind-of headbutt aimed at the vulnerable parts of the face) Amber is throwing a pokeball at Sandshrew 2.

Winona's attack landed spot on. Sandshrew lost its breath as the water-type slammed into its soft neck. The impact caused quite a flop to the earth for the two battling Pokemon, and with the pokeball sucking up the other Sandshrew, the effects of the sand attack were lifted. Now Amber could see the field clearly.
A sort of cough choked up from the smaller creature as it tried to push itself off the ground, but Winona hit a delicate area with an abrasive weapon, and that was enough to finish it off.
Amber's wasn't quite as lucky with the larger shrew. 1.. 2... 3.... Crack! The ball shattered into little pieces as the Sandshrew escaped from the ball. It seemed to be very defense oriented, unlike its more attack-centered counterpart. A blank yet terrifying stare was shot in Amber's direction before the Pokemon once again curled itself up. Well, at least there was only one left.
Sandshrew 1 fainted! Winona gains 10 EXP! Capture attempt failed. -remove 1 pokeball Sandshrew 2 used Defense Curl!
